Build Their World

20/Jun/2016

“Build Their World 2016” is a welfare/charity project organized by the Sri Lankan Student’s Society (SLSS) of
University of Wollongong, Australia. This year, in collaboration with AIESEC Colombo South (University of
Moratuwa, Sri Lanka), we aim to empower students in rural and remote areas of Sri Lanka by providing them
with educational resources; improving their school facilities and equipment; and implementing moral and
attitudinal development workshops to supplement their learning, well-being, and future.
This great idea and challenge has been roaming in the minds of the SLSS executive committee members
for quite a while now. However, it was firmly decided by the president of the committee that 2016 will be the
year that SLSS will give something back to our motherland. The inspiration for this challenging task came
from deep within; as we are grateful, privileged, and lucky enough to be provided with the access to proper
education, resources, shelter, emotional support, and guidance throughout out our schooling lives in which
it has shaped us to who we are today. We are truly in debt for what has been bestowed upon us.
Sadly enough, we come to the realization that even to this very day, social-inequality exists. We see and hear it
everywhere; the media conveys this message to us on a frequent basis, but we are so caught up in our own
busy lives that we simply don’t have the time to step forward and lend a hand. Despite the immense
commitments we have as university students, we will break apart that habit. We will take that extra step,
challenge ourselves, and commit towards bettering the lives of our follow brothers and sisters of Sri Lanka.
In unison with AIESEC South Colombo, we want to provide the students of “Godavangoda Kanishta Vidyalaya,
Tangalle” with the enduring love, support, and educational resources that will circumvent barriers and thus,
give them a pathway to discover and unleash their true potential. We want to show them that they are not
alone and that there is still hope. We want to show them the plethora of support bodies a nd networks available
for them. We want to create an environment that is conducive to their education, self-development, safety, and
well-being. And most importantly, we want to show them that they are loved.
