Public Lecture: Julia Collins
Date:4th Mar 2019
Time:4:30pm - 6:30pm
Location:21-G08, University of Wollongong, Wollongong, NSW
We are very excited to be presenting a public lecture by AMSI's Dr Julia Collins
Title: Knitting Mathematics
Abstract: It is impossible to be a knitter (or crocheter) without having mathematical intuition. Throughout history we see examples where knitters discovered concepts centuries before mathematicians did, from geometric shapes to the very idea of programmable computers. Mathematicians can also use knitting as a way of visualising and exploring complex ideas. In this talk I will show my favourite examples of the connections between mathematics and knitting, with lots of hands-on pieces for the audience to play with afterwards.
Join us for this delightful jaunt through deep mathematical whimsy! There will be some curious creations for attendees to investigate starting at 4:30pm, for the lecture to start at 5pm, and the talk is in 21-G08.
