Through the great efforts put forward by Dr. Nazmul Alam, and and various Muslim students and staff of the University of Wollongong in 1996, the Muslim Association of Wollongong University (MAWU) was established the following year in 1997. Currently MAWU has more than 250 members, from 50 different countries, making it the biggest and most multicultural student association on campus. The aim of MAWU is to provide a platform for Muslims to enhance their knowledge and for non-Muslims to be enlightened by the great teaching of Islam.
Prominent features of MAWU's facilities are the provisioning of an Islamic library, a noticeboard, laser printers and a kitchen (containing microwave, refrigeration and hot water amenities) in Building 56.

MAWU also runs a Muslim Prayer Space in Building 50 of University of Wollongong. Regular Friday sermons are held during academic session at the Muslim Prayer Space. Charity and other social activities are also conducted to enhance social harmony. MAWU is affiliated with national and International Islamic bodies to materialise its objectives.

MAWU objectives are:

  • Organising religious activities for Muslim students and staff of the university and neighbouring Muslim communities.

  • To advance the status of Muslims at the University of Wollongong as well as contributing to the awareness of Islam in Australia.

  • To provide a platform for unity among Muslims at the University of Wollongong.

  • Provide moral and spiritual support for Muslims who are in need.

  • Promote religious awareness and develop the spirit of brotherhood and sense of cooperation among Muslims.

  • Organise social events and lectures to increase Islamic understanding.

  • Provide non-Muslims a basic understanding of communities in general within the campus in particular.

Did you know that the text of the Qur'an has not changed in over 1400 years?                                                         Did you know that Qur'an revealed the full biological development of the Human Embryo 1400 years ago?                                  Did you know that 50,000 people embrace Islam every year in the USA?                     Did you know that Muslims believe in Jesus, Moses, Abraham as prophets of God?

About Islam

"O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion. Indeed, some suspicion is a sin. And spy not on each other, nor backbite each other. Would any of you like to t the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it. And fear God, for God is the one who accepts repentance, most Merciful."
(From the Holy Koran 49:12)

Where are we?

We are located at Buildings 50 & 56 in the main campus.
